What ISO 21001 covers
ISO 21001 is the international standard for a management system for educational organisations (EOMS). It is built around a simple idea: education organisations exist to serve learners, so the management system should be focused on learners, learning outcomes and the educational mission. It gives schools, training providers and other education bodies a certifiable framework tailored to what they actually do.
It is also the recognised successor to the withdrawn ISO 29990 learning-services standard, and applies to any organisation that delivers education or training.
What certification involves
Certification is a two-stage assessment that examines how the educational organisation is run, typically including:
- Understanding learners and other beneficiaries and their needs
- Educational processes — design, delivery and assessment of learning
- Learning outcomes and how they are measured and improved
- Resources, competence and the learning environment
It sits within the ISO Certifications portfolio and shares its structure with ISO 9001, with which it integrates well.
Timeline & process
For most educational organisations, ISO 21001 certification takes around 12–16 weeks, depending on size and the range of programmes in scope. Each engagement begins with a fixed-price scoping call and a proposal within 24 hours.
Common questions
Who needs ISO 21001?
Any organisation that provides education or training — schools, colleges, universities, vocational and professional training providers, and corporate learning functions. It is the recognised successor to ISO 29990 for learning-services providers.
How is ISO 21001 different from ISO 9001?
ISO 21001 shares the structure of ISO 9001 but is written specifically for educational organisations, putting learners and the educational mission at the centre — addressing learning outcomes and the needs of learners in a way general quality management does not.
